El prisionero fue una serie de televisión de ciencia ficción del Reino Unido del año 1967, protagonizada por Patrick McGoohan. Fue ideada por el mismo Patrick McGoohan y George Markstein, y producida por la ITC Entertainment de Sir Lew Grade para su emisión por la ITV. McGoohan escribió y dirigió varios episodios, la mayoría bajo seudónimo. El personaje protagonista, el Número Seis, es en apariencia un antiguo agente secreto del Gobierno Británico durante la Guerra Fría. Nunca es llamado por su nombre y la naturaleza exacta de su trabajo nunca se indica de forma explícita aunque numerosos episodios proporcionan pistas. Tras renunciar a su puesto, es secuestrado y retenido prisionero en un pequeño y aislado pueblo costero conocido como La Villa. Allí las autoridades (cuya identidad y lealtad nunca quedan claras) intentan dilucidar por qué el número seis presentó su renuncia. A lo largo de la serie Número 6 intenta escapar mientras desafía todos los intentos de quebrar su voluntad. También busca descubrir la identidad del misterioso "Número 1", quien presuntamente dirige La Villa. Hacia el final de la serie, el programa se desvía de forma bastante considerable de este esquema.
