『野ばらのジュリー』に続く「名曲ロマンシリーズ」の第二弾。今回はショパンの『幻想即興曲ハ短調』をメインの楽曲に据えて製作放映された。ナポレオン３世のフランス軍がプロイセン軍に敗れ、パリから自由が失われた普仏戦争の時代。フランス側の議員ティエールは己の財産を堅守するため、パリの権勢をプロイセンに売り渡していた。富豪地主ロスタン家の令嬢で15歳の少女イザベルは売国奴の所業に義憤を抱き、母国の自由を取り戻す戦いに加わろうと立ち上がる。オリジナルの史劇ロマンを、監督の早川啓二とメイン文芸の首藤剛志らが構築。とくに多くの人気作を手がける脚本家・首藤にとって主人公イザベルは思い入れ深いキャラクターであり、のちの作品『戦国魔神ゴーショーグン』などでその再生といえる登場人物を活躍させている。
