サンフランシスコに住むタナー夫妻には10歳のD.J.と5歳のステファニー、そして生後9か月のミシェルの3人の娘がいたが、不幸にも妻パメラが交通事故で亡くなってしまう。夫ダニーは親友ジョーイと義弟ジェシーに協力してもらって、男手だけで子育てすることに。ダニーはテレビ局でキャスターをしていて昼間は家にいないので、その間は、子供好きなコメディアンのジョーイと、エルヴィス・プレスリーを崇拝するミュージシャンのジェシーが子どもの面倒をみる。3人の娘に手を焼きながらも、2人は次第に父親らしくなっていく。
