ロサンゼルス市警殺人課の刑事コロンボが事件を解明していくミステリー・サスペンス。よれよれのトレンチコートに風采の上がらない主人公が、社会的地位の高い知的な犯人を追い詰めるというパターンが多く、犯人との知的駆け引きが見もの。名優ピーター・フォークの当り役となった。1968～78年に米NBCで放映。67年「殺人処方箋」、71年「死者の身代金」の2本のパイロット版がある。日本では1972～79年にNHKで放映。製作はユニバーサル。
