Это история многочисленного семейства О'Брайенов. Один из главных персонажей - архитектор и градостроитель Мик О'Брайен. Когда-то он решил создать коммуну на берегу Чесапикского залива, на земле, которой владели ещё его предки. Трудоголик, Мик своей поглощённостью в работу и упорством разрушил собственную семью и совсем испортил отношения с братьями. Жена от него ушла, но пятерых детей он ей не отдал, а отправил на воспитание своей матери Нелл. Прошли годы, дети, уже взрослые, один за другим начали съезжаться в Чесапик, чтобы воссоединить семью, найти понимание с отцом и попытаться примириться с матерью, которая, как они считают, их бросила.
