“汤米和塔彭丝夫妇探案”是阿加莎笔下一个比较另类的系列小说，不同于阿婆大部分作品的慢节奏和推理风，而是惊险悬疑的谍战故事。该系列一共五部小说，依次讲述的是一对男女从年轻时相识相爱（《暗藏杀机》和《犯罪团伙》），结婚生子（《桑苏西来客》），进入晚年（《煦阳岭疑云》和《命运之门》），在人生各个不同阶段经历，以“业余特工”这样的小人物身份，解决了下自陈年疑案，上自国家安全等重大难题的历险故事。该系列小说曾经三度被影视化，有趣的是，三次影视化分别从这对“业余特工夫妇”三个不同人生阶段入手。 1983年，英国ITV电视台拍摄播出了11集电视剧《汤米夫妇探案集》，由当时两位青年演员詹姆斯·沃里克和弗兰西丝卡·安妮丝分别主演汤米和塔彭丝夫妇，该剧选择改编两部讲述两位主人公年轻时代故事的小说，其中第一集根据长篇小说《暗藏杀机》改编，充分展现了这对青年男女在一战后重逢，迫于生计而合伙，又因机缘巧合卷入了一起国际间谍的案件，凭借一股闯劲挽救了国家危机的“年轻冒险家”的风采。后10集根据短篇小说集《犯罪团伙》改编，只是去掉了主人公夫妇受资深特工委托，以开侦探事务所为掩护，伺机获得苏俄间谍线索的大背景，直接将故事改编成场景喜剧，讲述主人公夫妇在新婚后开侦探事务所的趣味破案故事。
