《从地球到月球》是根据历史真人真事改编的作品，它借用了著名科幻小说家、法国人儒勒·凡尔纳的纪实小说《A Man on the Moon站在月球上的人》的内容和素材改编而成。它全景式地描写和反映了围绕二十世纪人类最重要的科学活动——“登陆月球'所发生的种种事件，再现了这个人类历史上最伟大的探险壮举中的无数感人片断。为了能够真实地重现美国的月球计划，此片的每项涉及天文与航天科学的部分都是完全真实并经得起历史推敲的，此片的拍摄不仅得到了美国政府和国家航空航天局（NASA）的鼎力协助，而且很多装备和场景都是采用了本片的执行监制汤姆·汉克斯演出的奥斯卡提名影片《阿波罗13号》一片当中的设施。因为汉克斯本人一直为自己在《阿》片中的表现没有得到全面的认可感到有些失望，也对类似此片这样反映美国登月计划这一重要历史题材的影视作品情有独钟，意犹未尽，因此专门拍摄了《从》一片，把失败的“阿波罗13号行动'前后的所有故事全数搬上了荧屏，甚至媒体一直都把汉克斯的《阿》这部代表影片视为是《从》片的热身作品。
