缅因州的古旧庄园威普斯塔夫里居住着胖子.瘦子斯特里奇三个幽灵和他们善良的侄子-----小精灵卡斯伯。 这座庄园的贪得无厌的继承人卡里根.克里腾登为了寻找隐藏在古堡中的一箱宝物经常受到幽灵的无情的戏和捉弄。气急败坏的米里根为此不得不请来著名的哈维博士帮忙制服幽灵。而哈维博士其实是为了寻找他逝去多年的爱妻阿米莉亚才答应此事的。 哈维博士带着女儿凯特住进庄园后不断受到几位恶毒精灵的骚扰和袭击，几乎神不守舍。可凯特却与小卡斯伯建立了极好的友谊善良的卡斯伯带着凯特参观了古堡的顶楼，那里堆满了卡斯伯活着时经常把玩的玩具。无意之中，卡斯伯和凯特发现了一条通往地下室的秘密通道，并在那里发现了卡斯伯父亲当年为挽救死去儿子所设计的一种机器。也就是说，卡斯伯有了复生的机会。但是，可恶的卡里根.克里腾登跟踪他们并洞悉了这一秘密，同时他还发现了藏在地下室中的一个神秘的保险柜。卡里更打定主意，为机密地取得宝物而把自己变成幽灵，再利用复生机器变回肉身的活人。于是他驾车坠崖。可笑和不幸的是，变成幽灵的卡里根发现，那神秘保险箱中只有一副卡斯伯的棒球手套。而那部只能使用一次的卡斯伯父亲的复生机器也被卡斯伯用来去拯救哈维博士......
