Dr. Mark Sloan arbeitet am Community General Hospital in LA, jedoch hilft er gerne seinem Sohn Lieutenant Detective Steve Sloan bei der Aufklärung von Mordfällen. Tatkräftige Unterstützung erhalten die beiden durch die Pathologin Dr. Amanda Bentley und dem Notfallchirurgen Dr. Jesse Travis. Das erste Mal trat Dick van Dyke als Dr. Mark Sloan in einer Folge von "Jake and the Fatman" auf. Die Figur wurde schon so entwickelt, dass sie eine eigene Serie tragen konnte. Doch der Sender war unschlüssig, weswegen zuerst verschiedene Fernsehfilme produziert wurden, bevor 1993 die Serie an den Start ging.
