Um seinem Kind ein besseres Leben bieten zu können, entscheidet sich der frühere Baseball-Spieler Tony Micelli dazu, mit seiner jungen Tochter Samantha aus dem New Yorker Stadtteil Brooklyn in ein kleines Städtchen nahe Fairfield County/Connecticut zu ziehen. Seinen ersten Job findet er als Haushälter bei Angela Bower, Chefin einer Werbeagentur und alleinerziehende Mutter des Jungens Jonathan.
