Die Serie handelt von einem ehemaligen Versicherungsdetektiv, der es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht hat, Menschen zu helfen, die von scheinbar übermächtigen Personen oder Institutionen unverschuldet in existenzielle Schwierigkeiten gebracht wurden. Dazu macht er sich selbstständig und verbündet sich mit vier Kriminellen, die jeweils auf einem bestimmten Gebiet herausragende Spezialisten sind. Die Gruppe agiert dabei zunächst unter dem Dach der Tarnfirma „Leverage Consulting & Associates“ und hat ein seriöses Büro in der Innenstadt. Nachdem dieses Büro am Ende der Staffel 1 zerstört wird, agiert das Team aus dem Hinterzimmer einer Bar heraus und in den späteren Staffeln in Nates Wohnung über der Bar.
