Die Serie basiert auf dem gleichnamigen Kinderbuchklassiker von Jill Murphy. Im Mittelpunkt steht Mildred Hoppelt, die aus einer Welt ohne Magie kommt und im Alter von zehn Jahren unvermittelt in der elitären Hexenakademie Graustein landet. Von nun an ist ihr Bestreben, Anschluss zu finden und nicht wegen ihren mangelnden Kenntnissen die lausigste Hexe an der Akadamie zu werden. Schon bald werden Maude Mondschein und Edith Nachtschatten zu Mildreds Freundinnen, doch mit Esther Edel erhält sie auch eine Erzfeindin.
