2030年、テッドは子供たちに母親との馴れ初めを話す。運命は、親友マーシャルが恋人リリーにプロポーズをした事で動き出した。負けず嫌いのテッドは、自分も永遠の愛を見つけようと決心する。ある日、テッドはロビンという女の子に一目惚れするが、これも失敗に終わってしまう。本作は、テッドが運命の女性である"ママ"と恋に落ちるまでに起こった数々のストーリーを描きあげた愉快なラブコメディー。
